Jared Schwartz, Kade Gianinetti and Chad Michael George met in 2012 while all working at Linger. They found a common interest in wishing to create innovative dining concepts that promoted responsible and local sourcing while giving the guest a memorable dining experience. After operating American Grind as a food truck for two years, it was time to open The Way Back in the Berkeley neighborhood.

In January 2017, American Grind came back to life as a vendor inside Avanti F&B.

In August 2017, the team also opened Wayward, a new responsibly-sourced restaurant located at 1610 Little Raven Street.
